The Sales tax tab shows what your posted sales owe for each filing period. Open a period to see the sales and locations behind it, the payments already made, and the balance. Only a business admin can open the tab or record a filed return. For a Canadian GST/HST return, the books show tax collected on sales less tax paid on purchases in Tax Recoverable. Square, Shopify merchant, Etsy, and customer invoices can carry charged GST/HST into the books with their sales. Provincial taxes are not split automatically from a combined charge.

Two ways to prepare

1

Open Taxes → Sales tax

Pick the jurisdiction and filing period. The period shows what the books recorded, what has been paid, and what remains due or in credit.
2

Check the sales

Open the sales behind the period. If a sale’s place, rate, or tax amount needs correction, open that sale and preview the change in its transaction editor before saving.
3

Prepare your GST/HST return

For Canada, open the period’s GST34 worksheet beside CRA GST/HST NETFILE. Copy each amount marked for entry into the matching line, leave the blank lines empty, and check that the totals the CRA calculates match the worksheet. Equated does not submit the return to the CRA.
4

Record the filed return

Once the GST/HST period has ended and NETFILE has accepted your return, enter the filing date and CRA confirmation number, then choose Mark as filed. Equated keeps the books’ net tax as the filed amount. Recording the filing does not rewrite sale entries; the period’s balance then follows the filed return.
If a payment to the tax authority is missing or categorized to the wrong account, correct that transaction before relying on the period balance. The books and the return remain separate records, so a difference between them stays visible.
